For some, the appearance of their hair might take short-term priority; however, for many, ensuring their hair is as healthy as it can be is the main goal and will ultimately provide them with flourishing curls in the long run. By recognising and addressing the signs of damage and creating a consistent care routine, you can effectively treat and improve the health of your hair.
ARE MY CURLS DAMAGED?
If you have or are experiencing one or some of the below, there is a good chance that you are hair is not in its most healthy state:
Inconsistent/Loss of Curl Pattern: If your curls have become limp, loose, or undefined (especially at the ends), damage, often from heat (artificial or environmental) or chemical treatments, may be the cause.
Frizz & Dryness: Excessive frizz and dryness are indicators of moisture imbalance, often caused by heat damage, over-processing, or lack of hydration.
Lack of Elasticity: Healthy curls should bounce back when stretched. If your hair doesn’t return to its original shape or breaks easily, it's likely to be damaged.
Tangles & Breakage: Damaged hair is more prone to tangles and breakage, especially around the ends.
If your hair is more damaged and looks straighter on top than underneath, this can certainly be the case. This can be due to multiple factors, such as the sun and environmental factors, as the top of your head is exposed to UV rays, wind, and pollution, which break down proteins in the hair and damage the cuticle. It also gets more touching and general manipulation, increasing mechanical damage to the underneath layers, which are often shielded and retain more moisture and integrity.
HOW CAN I RESTORE DAMAGED CURLS?
Regular Deep Conditioning: Deep conditioners and hair masks work to repair damaged strands by providing moisture and nutrients. Depending on the damage to your curls, use a Deep Conditioning Treatment once a week or bi-weekly.
Protein Treatments (In Moderation): Some curls can be protein-sensitive, but if they're damaged, protein treatments are key in helping rebuild the hair's structure. Use a protein treatment once every few weeks and note how it feels after each use. Overuse can make your curls feel stiff and brittle, so balance it with moisture treatments as well.
Hydrate & Moisturize: Choose a leave-in conditioner with ingredients like avocado or jojoba oil, like all of Jessicurl's Conditioners, that provide long-lasting moisture. Always apply while your hair is still damp to lock in moisture.
Be Gentle When Detangling: Hair is more prone to breakage when detangling, especially if done roughly or with the wrong tools. Always detangle when your hair is damp and conditioned, and use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. Start from the ends and work your way up gently to avoid pulling.
Patience is key when it comes to restoring damaged curls, but with consistency, you’ll notice your hair becoming healthier and more vibrant!
