If you’ve spent any time online, there’s no doubt you’ve come across the “Clean Girl Aesthetic” - identifiable by its lack of identifiable features, the aesthetic can be whittled down to minimalistic, with an emphasis on neutral tones and an air of effortless corporate put-togetherness. Though I don’t personally resonate, I can see and understand the appeal. However, as a Curly, the words “minimal effort,” have long been removed from my syntax. So, can a Curly be Clean Girl? A Curly can be any freakin’ thing they want to be!
One of the most recognizable looks of the Clean Girl Aesthetic is the slicked back ponytail. Starting off with lightly misted - at most slightly damp - hair, use a boar bristle brush to brush through a strong hold, non-crunching gel like Spiralicious Styling Gel to keep frizz at bay while gathering hair at the crown of the skull to form a ponytail. This look is best for Curlies on day three or four in my opinion, when curls may be starting to get a little flat at the roots.
If you really want to try out the slickback though, one of the cutest curly styles ever in my book is the half-up half-down. Otherwise, I think the best Clean Girl Curly look is wearing them down! Beautiful, bouncing curls are the best finishing touch to any outfit with any given aesthetic. A fresh wash day with defined, hydrated curls paired with simple jewelry, glowing skin, and your favorite basics checks every Clean Girl box - just with a little extra personality. Because trends come and go, but curls never have to be edited out to fit in.
At the end of the day, aesthetics are meant to inspire, not dictate. Whether your version of the Clean Girl look involves a sleek ponytail, a halo of defined curls, or something completely different, the goal is to feel like the best version of yourself. Curls don't need to be hidden, straightened, or tamed into submission to look polished - they're already perfect exactly as they are. So keep the trends that fill you with love, leave the ones that don't, and remember: confidence is the most effortless accessory!
