It’s time to clarify – or is it? It can be hard to know when or how to use Clarifying Shampoo on curly hair. For some of us, another step in our haircare routine seems so daunting. What the heck am I being asked to do anyway and more importantly, why?
Rest assured, resetting your routine with Clarifying Shampoo is easier and more rewarding than you may think!
To get answers to common questions, we met with our Chief Educator, Claire:
What is a clarifying shampoo?
A Clarifying shampoo provides a deeper cleanse and detox of the hair & scalp by removing stubborn dirt, grease, oil, product build-up as well as metal and mineral deposits.
Because our Clarifying Shampoo is step one in resetting your routine, it is only available in No Fragrance Added. No essential oils or artificial fragrances, leaving you with a truly clean slate!
Why do we need to clarify?
Clarifying your hair gives it a deep clean and reset. Build-up (accumulation of natural oils/sebum and added product) can sit on the scalp and hair strands, stopping your hair from absorbing all the other products that follow, such as conditioners and styling products. Regularly clarifying means better hydration and the ability to retain moisture and reduce frizz. It also plays a massive part in your scalp routine. The build-up of products and excess sebum can sit on the scalp and cause an imbalance in the microbiome. Therefore, clarifying can help with scalp issues and hair growth. Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp!
How does a clarifying shampoo differ from a regular cleanser?
A clarifying shampoo contains heavier surfactants than regular shampoo. In our case gentle, sulfate-free surfactants eliminate grease, product residue, and impurities from your scalp and hair strands. It's a heavy-duty cleanser you can use to reset your hair every once in a while.
Signs you need to clarify:
- Greasy flat roots
- Dry/irritated scalp
- Hair looks dry and dull no matter what products are used to combat this
- Excess Frizz
- Limp curls/waves
- Styling products aren’t working
- Excess shedding (more than usual)
How often should you clarify?
Many factors determine how often you should use clarifying shampoo, such as how frequently you wash your hair, if you live in an area with hard water, sporting activities such as swimming, hair density, etc, but a good benchmark is 1-2 times a month.
How to use Clarifying Shampoo:
Massage shampoo into scalp. Finger-comb lather through length of hair and rinse well. For best results, combine our Clarifying Shampoo with a scalp brush to remove excess buildup and stimulate blood flow. To enrich your curls with a moisture base follow with Too Shea! Extra Moisturizing Conditioner for fine hair or Deep Conditioning Treatment for medium to thick & protein-sensitive hair.
A routine reset for all hair types that is no fragrance added, gluten-free, vegan, & improves the effectiveness of your styling routine is a product you can believe in! What more could you ask for?!
