It may not feel like it yet, but technically, Spring is just around the corner; I cannot wait for lighter nights and warmer days! As we think about Spring and come out of hibernation, we look to areas where we can spring clean or start a new season with a fresh approach. Is it time to start thinking about your spring hair care routine?
I often get asked if we need to switch up our routines or hair products as the weather warms up? Here are three simple tips for restoring your hair and keeping it feeling and looking its best this spring!
Use lukewarm water for rinsing:
Winter months can have an overall drying effect on our scalp and hair due to harsh weather and exposure to central heating. Staying clear of hot water in the shower, especially for fine hair, which can be pretty delicate, can make a difference. Opt for lukewarm water for rinsing instead if you can bear it. Heat opens up the cuticle (the surface layer) of the hair, which can cause damage to already weakened hair. Cooler water means that the hair's cuticle stays put, resulting in nutrients staying inside the hair shaft and a shinier appearance.
Increase your protein and Vitamins:
Some people experience hair loss all year round; it’s normal and happens naturally to everyone. However, Winter is the season when it is more common due to decreased sunlight exposure and changes in temperature and humidity. Increasing proteins and vitamins orally will help your hair from within, but protein and vitamins can be applied topically as part of your spring hair care routine. Oat protein is a vegan alternative to keratin, and aloe vera provides similar benefits to Vitamin B5 by soothing and hydrating the scalp. These two strengthening and nourishing ingredients get deep into the hair strands.
Less heat where possible:
Many ditch the diffuser and air dry as the outside temperature starts to warm up. While it may not be time to let those curls air dry yet, give them a helping hand by exposing them to less heat. This can be beneficial because the hair becomes a little drier and brittle during winter. Remove excess water and speed up your diffusing time by scrunching or micro-plopping with a super absorbent microfibre tool. Or plop your curls in a micro fibre turban-style towel as you get ready, or take this time to relax!
