Autumn comes with crisp air and cosy knits, but for curly hair? Not always a dream. Many of us notice that as soon as the weather shifts, our curls start to shift too.
If you find that your curls seem to lose their way entirely during this season, don’t panic. It’s not that your curls are “broken”, they’re just reacting to seasonal changes. Let’s take a look at why this happens (so you don’t feel alone) and how to revive your curl pattern with a few easy tweaks.
Why Curls Lose Shape in Autumn
- Friction from Additional (and more often than not) Cozy Layers - Hats, scarves, and chunky sweaters are autumn essentials, but they rub against your curls, causing tangles, frizz, and flattened sections. Think of it like fabric “squashing” your curl clumps.
- Moisture & Weather Changes - Cooler, drier air means less humidity (your curls’ secret volume booster, even though we sometimes dread it!). The result? Curl patterns collapse and can leave hair limp or undefined.
- Static from Rough Fabrics - Wool and other heavy knits create static that lifts your hair cuticle and breaks apart curl clumps.
- More Indoor Heating - Moving between chilly outdoors and dry central heating? Your curls get confused and lose their spring.
How to Revive Curl Shape this Season
1. Bounce Revival with Rockin’ Ringlets or Gelebration Spray
When your curls start falling flat, these products act like a jumpstart button.
Rockin’ Ringlets Styling Potion: Helps re-form, enhancing your curl pattern, tightening curl clumps, and giving shape back where it’s lost.
Gelebration Spray: provides the same structure and benefits as Rockin Ringlets but with lightweight hold and definition without weighing hair down for wavies or those with finer curls
2. Quick Refresh with Awe Inspiraling Spray
For days when your curls just need a little bit of a helping hand:
Spritz Awe Inspiraling Refresher Spray all over dry curls. Scrunch upwards to re-activate your existing products and bring back definition. It’s the perfect solution for in-between washes, especially when hats or scarves have flattened the top layer.
3. Detangle Gently with a Wide-Tooth Comb
All that scarf and sweater friction leads to tangles, but don’t rip through them.
Apply conditioner or a DIY detangling spray (made with water and a small amount of conditioner). Work in sections with a wide-tooth comb, starting from the ends up.
Patience saves curls and prevents breakage. See my next/previous blog for more tips on this!
4. Protective Styles are Your Autumn Bestie
Sometimes prevention is the best cure. Keep your curls tucked and safe under all those cosy layers with styles like a pineapple or bun under a satin-lined beanie, loose braids or twists, low ponytail secured with a silk scrunchie. Not only do these protect against tangles and friction, but they also make refreshing way easier.
